I love baby-led weaning! And so does Snow White! It’s been nearly ten weeks since we started giving her solid food, and we’ve all been enjoying the adventure.
I love the way that she’ll want different foods on different days and I can’t ever predict what she’ll eat. She usually tries everything I put on her tray, but at each meal there’s often a certain food that she chooses above all the others. Maybe she’ll go back for every single pasta spiral. Or lick and bite all the cream cheese off her bread. Or munch piece after piece of roast chicken.
When we started it was the height of British strawberry season and she loved to squish them, as shown by the death-juices running down her fingers above! She didn’t eat a whole lot though, so I was surprised yesterday when she polished off seven on the trot without wasting a drop! They were each crushed between her front gums, then mauled round her mouth with much grimacing until she could swallow them.
I’m so glad we chose to do this rather than me spending my evenings steaming and pureeing and freezing little cubes. It’s lovely to eat as a family already and make it a real social occasion.
Update (13th September 2009):
Snow White seems to be eating so much these days! BLW is still getting a big thumbs up from all of us here! She now has morning and afternoon snacks as well as three good meals a day. She still likes to top up with breastmilk before naps and before bed though. Current favourite foods include peas, bread with cream cheese, mummy’s pizza, blueberries… I could go on!
