My sweet little son Bluebird turned 6 months old today!
After single-handedly growing this boy from a bundle of cells to nineteen pounds of chubbiness (over 280 days on the inside, 177 on the outside) my body is certainly feeling tired! So although I’m anticipating many more pints of milk production in the months ahead, it’s nice that solid food is now putting in an appearance.
After baby-led weaning Snow White, we knew Bluebird would be introduced to solid food in the same way… but this time I started five days early… ooo look at me bending the rules!
He is absolutely loving it, chomping on everything we offer him (and stealing some things we had meant to keep out of reach… handfuls of vanilla ice cream not recommended as a first food!) and relishing the chance to drink water from an open cup. Here you see him at the end of day one, enjoying sucking full fat plain yoghurt from a spoon. In true BLW style, I’ve been checking the dirty nappies, and yes he has been swallowing food!
The next stage of his babyhood is well and truly launched into!

Hi ! Came across your blog via the BLW forum…looking for advice.
I will be following your blog from now on. My daughter is 5 months and a week and I am looking to start next week and see how she does. Which first food would you recommend? I was thinking cucumber, or broccoli? I have ordered the book but won’t get it until late april…
Hello! Cucumber or broccoli would both be fine. Any fruit or vegetable you happen to have on hand which are a manageable texture would be good for a first try. Remember they shouldn’t be so soft or slippery that your daughter can’t get hold of them or get them to her mouth… but not so hard that she can’t get pieces off when chewing, or that pieces could be a choking hazard. Lots more advice for starters available at the forum!
